Promoted side Telstar had the first chances of the game. Youri Baas prevented Milan Zonneveld from pulling the trigger with a superb tackle, and shortly afterwards the visitors also struck the post.

As the first half progressed, Ajax began to perform better. This led to the opener in the nineteenth minute. Steven Berghuis set up Weghorst, who broke the deadlock.

Between the 35th and 42nd minute, Ajax had three huge chances to make it 2-0, but Steven Berghuis, Bertrand Traoré and Raúl Moro could not convert. As a result, it remained 1-0 at half-time.

In the second half, the first moments again belonged to Telstar, who were a threat throughout the match. However, Vitezslav Jaros was alert and could look back on a fine debut. Aaron Bouwman and Moro also made their first official minutes for Ajax.

The decisive moment came seven minutes from time, when Weghorst headed in the 2-0 from a corner. The striker outjumped goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Junior, who had moments earlier denied Kenneth Taylor a goal.

All in all, it was a happy ending for Ajax, in a match where more goals could have been scored at both ends.
