Before the duel with the Deventer team Ajax said goodbye to Matthijs de Ligt. The former captain thanked the supporters who had gathered. "It's fantastic to be here again. When you look back, you realise what a special club Ajax is. I know I'll miss you."

Unfortunately the Ajax players did not appear to be inspired by the beautiful words from the former Ajax team member. Even though the home team had plenty of time on the ball, the tempo was too slow to break Go Ahead Eagles.

At the end of the match Erik ten Hag was critical of his team. "We had so much possession, but what matters is what you do with it. We should have been hungry to get the goal. That was missing against FC Utrecht and Heracles too. We have to do something about that."

Despite the draw, Ajax remains the frontrunner in the Eredivisie, level on points with PSV. But the Amsterdam team's goal total is somewhat better.
