Ajax started the match in control and dictated the tempo for large parts of the opening half. The visitors combined confidently in midfield and regularly created danger going forward. Mika Godts proved decisive before the break, scoring twice to put Ajax firmly in charge. As a result, Fred Grim’s team went into the dressing room with a comfortable 0–2 lead.
After the restart, however, the match took a different turn. Ajax struggled to maintain their grip on the game, allowing Excelsior back into the contest. The home side increased the pressure in the final phase of the match, which eventually led to two goals. Miliano Jonathans reduced the deficit before Arthur Zagre scored the equaliser, leaving Ajax empty-handed despite their earlier dominance.
In addition to the goals, the match also marked two milestones for Ajax. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jinairo Johnson both made their Eredivisie debuts, gaining their first minutes at the highest domestic level.
Ajax will now shift their focus to the next Eredivisie fixture. The Amsterdam side face AZ on Sunday, February 8. Kick-off is scheduled for 14:30 in Alkmaar.
