Ajax started the match furiously, but a blistering opening phase went unrewarded. The pace then dropped somewhat with the hosts, who took the lead after 31 minutes. A quick attack, eventually ending with a shot from Oscar Gloukh, seemed to come to nothing, but the rebound landed at the feet of Berghuis. The left-footer did not hesitate and pulled the trigger: 1-0.
The margin of one remained on the scoreboard for a long time. Ajax had plenty of chances to score a second or even a third, but glorious opportunities were squandered time and again. Heracles goalkeeper Fabian de Keijzer was also frequently in the way.
Three minutes before the end the decision followed after all. Weghorst fired home from a pass by Davy Klaassen, and after review by the VAR the goal stood.
Thus Ajax crossed the finish line as winners and now have seven points after three matches. Next Saturday the Amsterdammers will visit FC Volendam in matchweek four.
