Heitinga (Alphen aan den Rijn, November 15, 1983) made his debut as interim head coach at Ajax during the victorious Eredivisie match against Excelsior on January 29: 1-4. Heitinga and Ajax reached an agreement on February 2, 2023, stating that the 39-year-old former player would remain head coach for the rest of the 2022/2023 season.
As a player, Heitinga attended the youth academy in Amsterdam, and played seven seasons for Ajax’s first team. He then transferred to Atlético Madrid, Everton, Fulham and Hertha BSC, before making his return to Ajax in 2015. After his retirement in 2016, the former Dutch national team player had multiple coaching positions at Ajax’s youth academy. In the 2016/2017 season, he was Marcel Keizer’s assistant coach at Ajax U23 and led the highest youth team from 2017 to 2021, the current Ajax U18. Since the summer of 2021, he was head coach of Ajax U23.
