The mission is crystal clear for the team from Amsterdam. To keep any chance of securing a coveted place in the intermediate round, the play-off round for qualification for the knockout phase of Europe’s premier club competition, Ajax must win. But even then, qualification is not guaranteed. Only if results elsewhere go in Ajax’s favour, allowing the club to make a significant leap up the standings with a victory, can qualification be secured.

The Ajacieden have collected six points from the seven matches played so far. Under coach Grim, Qarabağ (2–4 in Azerbaijan) and, as recently as last week, Villarreal (1–2) were defeated. Upcoming opponent Olympiakos have so far collected two points more. The club from the Greek port city of Piraeus, therefore, sits eight places above Ajax, just holding on to a play-off position. The League Phase 2025/2026 features 36 participating clubs. As the Greek top club is also not yet assured of a place in the next round, they too need a result.
Based on the respective starting positions of Ajax and Olympiakos, Wednesday promises to be a highly exciting football evening at the ArenA. An evening with a great deal at stake for both clubs. An evening on which history could be written. The Ajacieden can make good use of the support of a sold-out home stadium.
Ajax – Olympiakos kicks off at 21:00.
