Weghorst and Klaassen have been keen darts fans for many years. For the Ajacieden, it was therefore special to cross swords with two renowned British names. In the run-up to the World Series of Darts Finals at AFAS Live, Price and Smith came to the Johan Cruijff ArenA to showcase their skills and were also given a tour there.
Klaassen was paired with Price, something Weghorst would have preferred differently beforehand. "My favourite darts player is The Iceman,” said the Ajax striker, referring to Price’s nickname. "I would have liked to have him on my team."
It led to hilarity among them when Klaassen mentioned a famous action by Price. "I wanted to put on headphones," the midfielder referred to the famous World Championship moment from 2023.
Klaassen thought it was wonderful to share the stage with two professional darts players. "Like Wout, I’ve been watching darts from a young age as well. Even before you came onto the scene," the Ajax captain said to Price and Smith. "Back in the days when Barney was becoming big. I watched with my brother and together we tried to copy him. I’m a big fan of darts and the guys. It was an honour."
Team-mate Price felt the same way. "It was a lot of fun, although I wasn’t really in great form." On the other team, Smith enjoyed the strong Weghorst. "Absolutely brilliant. Scoring well and finishing too. Even if you missed a double, it wasn’t by much."
