Ajax’s start was sublime. Within twenty minutes, Ajax were leading 2-0 thanks to goals made by Carlos Forbs and Steven Berghuis. After the 2-0, the visitors took off, and Ajax failed to withstand the pressure. Through a fantastic action made by Jonathan Claus, the French scored 2-1. Before half-time, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the 2-2. Maurice Steijn’s team avoided ending the match in a loss after Olympique Marseille hit the crossbar.

Again, Ajax started the second half strong, and Kenneth Taylor scored 3-2. Once more, Marseille put pressure, but less convincing than before half-time. Ajax fought off most attempts until Aubameyang scored the equaliser after a strong individual action.
