Maurice Steijn made four changes to his opening line-up on Sunday. Georges Mikautadze, Gaston Avila and Josip Šutalo made their first appearances for Ajax. Kristian Hlynsson also got a place in the opening line-up. Kenneth Taylor and Jakov Medić started out on the bench, while Steven Bergwijn was unfit. Owen Wijndal was also absent from the match squad.

Ajax initially got off to good start. Within ten minutes the home team was awarded a penalty following a foul by Devyne Rensch. Fortuna Sittard striker Noslin went up to the spot, but shot way over Jay Gorter's bar.

The Ajax players struggled to set up any opportunities in the first half. Brian Brobbey nearly made it 1-0 just before half time, but he was offside. The Ajax striker saw his goal disallowed, so Steijn's team remained at 0-0.

In the second half, Ajax went hunting a first goal. The best opportunity fell to newbie Avila after a corner was deflected, only to see his efforts fly high over and wide of the opposing goal.

After more than an hour of play, Anton Gaaei and Chuba Akpom entered the fray. Both new signings saw their first action for Ajax 1. Despite the reinforcements, Ajax failed to score in Limburg. The game ended how it started: 0-0.
