Ajax has ended the pre-season with a draw. A few hours after Ajax’s victory against Béziers (0-2), the friendly match between Olympique Marseille and Ajax ended at 2-2. Mateo Cassierra opened the score early on. After halftime, the French team gained momentum. Kasper Dolberg scored the tying goal in the final minutes.
Less than a week before the home Champions League qualifying round match against PAOK, Peter Bosz used all of his players over 90 minutes of football. Three Ajacieds didn’t play in France as a precaution. In addition to the absence of Amin Younes (groin injury), and Lasse Schöne (knee injury), Riechedly Bazoer was also kept on the sideline. The 19 year-old midfielder is suffering from slight problems with his thigh. Peter Bosz moved Jairo Riedewald forward by one line, and he played the entire match as a ‘6’ as a defending midfielder.
Cassierra - El Ghazi train
With Mateo Cassierra at left wing, Ajax had a promising start to the match. The Columbian was the one who, within seven minutes, scored a goal for the Amsterdam team on a low pass from Anwar El Ghazi. It was the forward’s second goal for Ajax.
A few minutes later, it was the man who made the assist, El Ghazi, who went for gold himself after a flawless play. The right winger’s shot met the French stands. A few minutes later, it was Cassierra who offered El Ghazi another opportunity, but the right winger’s second attempt found the legs of the Marseille keeper.
Comeback Olympique Marseille
Olympique Marseille didn’t waste any time in the second half, and within two minutes, they had their first big opportunity. But a hard shot was blocked by an Amsterdam leg. Peter Bosz noticed that the match had tipped and signaled to the Ajacieds from the sidelines. After that, it was Mateo Cassierra who could have given the Amsterdam team some breathing room, but the striker shot a 100 per cent chance over the goal.
After this missed opportunity, Olympique Marseille scored. A quick breakaway led to a penalty, and Bouna Sarr scored flawlessly. This gave the French some hope, and four minutes later, Romain Alessandrini outplayed Jasper Cillessen from far out. The roles had reversed in the Stade de la Méditérannée: 2-1. The French expected to win the game, but Kasper Dolberg had another idea. Cassierra sent a header onto the crossbar, and after that the Dane sent a rebound against the ropes: 2-2.
After this friendly win, the third round UEFA Champions League qualification match against PAOK Saloniki is the next highlight on the agenda. On Tuesday, July 26 (Amsterdam ArenA) and Wednesday, August 3 (Toumbastadium), Ajax will stride for a ticket in the CL playoffs.
