Ajax played against Internazionale with a very young team. The Italian side won 1-0, leaving Ajax to finish fourth in the LG Amsterdam Tournament.
The title in the tournament went, as it did last year, to Arsenal. To catch up with the Gunners, who had drawn with Sevilla (1-1) in their second match, Ajax wouyld have had to defeat Inter by 4-0. A task that was too big for the young team that Marco van Basten fielded. With players such as Toby Alderweireld (added to the squad on Saturday), Gregory van der Wiel, Javier Martina and Donovan Slijngard, Ajax began with a young and unexperienced team against the Italian champions.
The team struggled with Inter's pressure in the early stages. ,,We could have scored four goals in the first ten minutes”, Internazionale coach José Mourinho said. ,,Ajax played with many young players and it was difficult for them in the beginning. But after that they did well. Marco must be pleased with the way his guys played. A match like this is good for their development.”
Despite the many chances, Inter scored only once. Adriano scored after five minutes. Van Basten admitted that he had had doubts whether to play with such a young team against Inter. ,,Our reputation was at stake. But you simply cannot play guys ninety minutes two days in a row.”
Van Basten saw his team get better as the match went on. There were chances for Dario Cvitanich, Siem de Jong and Dennis Rommedahl. But Inter remained the better team. Both teams made many substitutions in the second half. For Ajax, Miralem Sulejmani came on for Cvitanich and Huntelaar and Gabri also came on. It nearly brought Ajax level. Sulejmani fired from up close at goalkeeper Francesco Toldo in the 87th minute.
Ajax ended the tournament in fourth place. Inter were second, Sevilla third.
