Wesley Sonck joins Ajax

Ajax have reached an agreement with K.R.C. Genk about the transfer of Wesley Sonck. The 24 year-old striker will sign with Ajax for five seasons. As usual, Ajax do not disclose financial details of the agreement.

Wesley Sonck will report on Sunday for a medical examination. He will be presented to the media on Monday.

Part of the deal with Racing Genk is the transfer of South-African defender Aaron Mokoena and Paul Kpaka, forward from Sierra Leone, of Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen to Racing Genk. Ajax have an technical collaboration with Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen.

Wesley Sonck was born in Ninove (Belgium) on August 9 1978. After starting out with local side VK Ninove he made his debut in the highest Belgian league in 1997. He moved to Racing Genk in 2000 after two seasons RWD Molenbeek, one season Germinal Ekeren and one season Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen.

Sonck was Racing Genk's top scorer in the last three seasons. He was also Belgium's leading scorer in the last two seasons with 30 and 24 goals respectively.

Wesley Sonck guided Genk, coached by Dutchman Sef Vergoossen, to the national title in 2002. Last season was Sonck's first in the UEFA Champions League. After scoring twice in two matches in the preliminary round, he scored 2 goals in six matches in the first group stage.

Sonck won the prestigious Golden Shoe in 2001. In 2002 he finished second in this competition.

Wesley Sonck also made his debut for the national team of Belgium in 2001. Sonck has earned 25 caps for Belgium and has scored 7 times for the Red Devils. He played 4 matches in the World Cup of 2002 in Korea and Japan, scoring 1 goal. Belgium was eliminated in the second round by eventual world champions Brazil.
