Wesley Sonck is The Man against the Belgians

With two goals against his fellow countrymen from Club Brugge, Wesley Sonck won the Ajax-crowd for him. Through the actions of the Belgian right winger, the side from Amsterdam won by 2-0 in the first round of the UEFA Champions League.

Ajax played in almost the same side as last Sunday, when Willem II was demolished 6-0. The only difference was that Rafael van der Vaart played instead of Wesley Sneijder.

That meant that Wesley Sonck was still on the right wing of Ajax. It proved a wise choice by Ajax's coach Ronald Koeman. Zlatan Ibrahimovic set up Sonck with a back-heel pass in the 11th minute and the Belgian striker did not hesitate: 1-0 for Ajax.

Ajax owed the fact that they were still leading at halftime to Julien Escudé. The Frenchman saved the ball from the goal line when Petri Pasanen made his only mistake of the match, allowing Brugge to break though.

In the second half Ajax's coach Ronald Koeman replaced left winger Tom Soetaers with Wesley Sneijder, who operated from midfield. The substitute passed it beautifully to Sonck, who had an open goal before him. The Belgian striker again hit the netting, just avoiding off-side: 2-0. ,,That's my specialty'', Sonck said afterwards.

Ajax kept their composure and never surrendered their lead. Club Brugge's coach Trond Sollied gave the match a strange twist afterwards. ,,It was like AC Milan - Ajax. Ajax were better but Milan scored the goal.'' With that the Norwegian coach implied that his team had been better, but Ajax scored the goals. That could not have been further away from the truth. Van der Vaart and De jong were closer to scoring 3-0 than the team from Belgium had been close to scoring the equaliser.
