Ajax and Jan van Halst have terminated their contract. Van Halst (33) subsequently signed for Vitesse for a year and a half. The midfielder tranfers to the club from Arnhem immediately.
Jan van Halst reported for the first training of the new year with Ajax on Wednesday morning. On Thursday evening he dressed in the yellow and black strip of Vitesse.
Van Halst came to Ajax from FC Twente in the summer of 1999. Under coach Co Adriaanse he did not see much playing time and he was told to look for another club at the start of the 2000-2001 season. He was hired out to Fortuna Sittard for the remainder of the season in November 2000.
Almost a year later, Van Halst tried out with Sheffield United, but that did not lead to a transfer. Three months later Ronald Koeman, who had replaced Adriaanse, called Van halst back to the A-squad of Ajax. Van Halst played an important part in the last half of the successful 2001-2002 season, when he won the double with Ajax.
On Wednesday morning, Koeman told the press that Van Halst would always be welcome on Ajax's training, because of his fantastic mentality, but that he would not see much playing time and was allowed to look out for another club.
