‘Very proud of Ziggo as a main sponsor’

Ajax and Ziggo officially presented their partnership on Friday at the Amsterdam ArenA. The club and cable and media company showed a united front to reporters. Per January 1, 2015, Ziggo will adorn Ajax 1 and the Ajax Reserves’ jerseys and training suits, among others.

“It’s a special day, a historic day”, said Ajax’s General Manager Michael Kinsbergen in the ArenA’s press room. The Ajacied was flanked by his marketing director Edwin van der Sar and Diederik Karsten (Executive Vice President Liberty Global’s European Operations and potential Board of Directors member of Ziggo after the takeover by Liberty Global). The club and its brand new main sponsor (per January 1, 2015) are pleased with each other. With Ziggo on the jerseys and training suits of Ajax 1 and the Ajax Reserves starting in the new year (another sponsor for the other Ajax teams and the Toekomst is still being sought), the club is now on its fourth main sponsor in club history. TDK, ABN AMRO and Aegon were Ziggo’s predecessors. Kinsbergen: “We’re very proud to have Ziggo as our fourth main sponsor. Ziggo is a great brand and a modern, ambitious company. Technique plays an important role for both Ajax and Ziggo.”

Afterwards, the general manager highlighted several points of the sponsorship agreement. Main sponsor Ziggo will enjoy the most extensive sponsorship package. The partnership is effective for 4,5 years. The yearly annual fee is €8 million euro, with a variable component of maximum €2 million euro per year. This variable component is linked to the Ajax 1’s performance in European football. Kinsbergen: “An amount will be added in each round. The amount is higher for the UEFA Champions League than for the UEFA Europa League.”

Ajax hopes to find a new sponsor shortly for the youth academy, the Ajax Women, Ajax amateurs and Toekomst sports complex. With this structure, the club may be able to shift its sponsorship incomes. “With this partnership, we will be able to continue implementing our vision and policies in the right way. Without financial stress.”
