Van Halst sees supporting role for himself

For Jan van Halst, 2002 went differently than he expected. He was called back to the first team by Ronald Koeman and won the double with Ajax. Next year will be different for him.

Where are you at Christmas and/or New Year's Eve?
,,i am staying home, unlike last year. Then we went on holiday. We have been away with the team so often this season, that it feels good to stay in this time.”

,,I grew up without celebrating Christmas, because we always went on a ski vacation. At eight in the morning everybody said 'Merry Christmas' and then went skiing. So I did not really know the real Christmas atmosphere. I only got to know that in the last few years. But I like it. The Christmas lights go on in town weeks before. The shopping type? No, not really, when my wife goes shopping, I go to the pub for a glass of wine.’’

What was the most important in 2002?
,,In football the fact that we won the double. The celebration and the emotion afterwards were fantastic. I personally had not expected it, so then it's even better. I remember that we looked at each other two minutes before the end in the championship match and we joked that I could actually win a title.’’

Expectations for 2003?
,,Compared to last year my role has diminished, which is logical. I am 33 years old and the club is developing very rapidly with all those young and good midfielders, so I can live with that. I hope I can play a supporting role in that. I don't necessarily have to tranfer to another club.’’

With whom would you like to drink champagne?
,,With the neighbours. When we moved in the place was dead, but we have managed to change all that. How? Just force them into the house and make them drink. I demand that they all come and have champagne with us”
