Van der Wiel’s Cruyff Court in Curacao

Gregory van der Wiel has opened his own Cruyff Court in Curacao. Ajax’s right back was selected as the EredivisieTalent of the Year in 2010. The Johan Cruyff Prize which comes with the award consists of a statuette and a Cruyff Court at a location of his choice. The Dutch international selected the Sapaté neighbourhood in Curacao.

In the presence of Curacao’s Minister-President Schotte, Van der Wiel opened the newly laid out Cruyff Court with a football tournament for the local youth. Sapaté was chosen in collaboration with Curacao’s Integral Neighbourhood Committee as the most appropriate location among the five potential high need neighbourhoods in Curacao.

Cruyff Courts offer a safe, great environment where kids can play sports outside all year, in the middle of the neighbourhood. In cooperation with local organisations and the Johan Cruyff Foundation, activities on and around the Sapaté field are organised. The new Cruyff Court is thus contributing to increasing the neighbourhood’s quality of life.

Miralem Sulejmani also recently opened his own Cruyff Court in the Holendrecht neighbourhood of Amsterdam. The forward was selected as Eredivisie Talent of the Year in 2008.
