Gregory van der Wiel made his comeback Monday on the training field. The 24 year old defender joined the group after suffering a three month long injury. Days after the ADO- Ajax match (0-2), the right back participated in several rounds of keep away with the reserve players. Kolbeinn Sigthórsson and Derk Boerrigter also took part. Lorenzo Ebecilio practiced separately.
Exactly three months and one day after his last performance with Ajax (home game against ADO on December 18), Van der Wiel resumed group training. He was greeted by a warm applause by both staff and teammates at the beginning of the session. This brought a lasting smile to the face of the 29 time international.
Sigthórsson started his second week with the group on Monday. After being side-lined for months due to a broken bone in his ankle, the Icelander returned last Monday. During the keep away rounds and other exercises, a nice duel between Sigthórsson and Van der Wiel regularly took place. Just like Derk Boerrigter, they are making a slow, controlled build up to their return to Ajax 1. A return which as, of yet, has no exact date for any of the three players.
Lorenzo Ebecilio worked on his recovery with physiotherapist Jos Kortekaas. The forward left last Friday’s training with an injured groin. For this reason, he was forced to miss the match against ADO. It’s still not clear when coach Frank de Boer will have the forward at his disposal.
