Hatem Trabelsi has sigend a new, two-year contract with Ajax. The Tunisian defender, who was in a dispute with his club for several months, returns to the first team immediately.
Managing director Arie van Eijden announced that Trabelsi has signed his contract extension on Friday. ,,The financial reward is the same as the one we offered before the whole case began.''
Van Eijden told the press that coach Ronald Koeman had started the reunion process with a personal conversation with the player. ,,I then had a talk with Hatem myself this week. We are looking ahead to the future with an open mind and we will see the Trabelsi we all know again.''
Ronald Koeman took the initiative to re-open talks with his defender. ,,I received some signals and I had the feeling myself that Hatem would be willing to talk to me. It was just a conversation between coach and player, there were no others present. I went to his house and we talked about the past and the future. I am perfectly willing to forget what has happened and I will treat him just like any other player. Trabelsi has always been an important and good player for Ajax. I also discussed it in the team and the guys were happy. The have never had a problem with Hatem personally.''
Trabelsi himself sat there with a big grin on his face. ,,It has been my own decision to return. I am happy to be part of the team again. About a possible transfer when the window opens in January, I know nothing. First I have to play for Ajax. I trained for myself in the Olympic Stadium to stay fit. I am going to consult with the medical staff about the program I have to follow now. I think I am at 70 to 80 per cent.''
