Malte Thygesen experienced a few wonderful days in Amsterdam. Together with his parents Uffe and Nenna and his younger brother Sofus, Malte was welcomed by Ajax. The Danish eleven year old’s wish came true thanks to the Make-A-Wish foundation, Ajax and Christian Eriksen.
Malte’s wish was to meet his football hero Christian Eriksen. Make-A-Wish Denmark and the Netherlands put the wish to Ajax. Would this be possible? Absolutely! The Thygesen family were invited, not only to meet with the Danish Ajax player, but also to watch the match Ajax - RKC Waalwijk. Malte and his family enjoyed the 3-0 victory over the team from Waalwijk from the stands and then he met his football hero. Eriksen broke the ice by presenting Malte with a bunch of flowers.
On Monday they met with Eriksen again at the Ajax Academy. Shortly after practice Malte and his younger brother Sofus gathered with their parents in the canteen of the sports complex. Time to catch up with their fellow countryman. The quality-time was continued in the Ajax Experience on the Rembrandtplein. The Thygesens were given a private tour through the virtual museum with Eriksen as their guide. Malte could walk around the experience at his own pace and in his own time.
Shyly Malte sits down next to Eriksen in the Experience changing rooms. Now it’s time to listen to Frank de Boer’s team talk. Eriksen also listens carefully to his manager. After the pep talk by De Boer, applause comes through the loudspeakers. The lights come on. ,,It is exactly the same as in our changing rooms’’, Eriksen says. ,,But we don’t applaud after a team talk’’, he adds laughing. The tour continues to the Amsterdam ArenA. When everyone has taken their seats in the stadium, they watch the great highlights. Ajax’ thirtieth national title, the Champions League win in 1995, the Top matches, the debut by a very young Dennis Bergkamp, they are all a part of Ajax’ rich history.
After the tour the Danish guests paid a visit to the Ajax Fan Shop. They checked out all the Ajax merchandise at their leisure and were even given goodie bags and Ajax shirts to take home with them. Of course they were signed by Christian Eriksen, who thoroughly enjoyed spending the afternoon with Malte. Father Uffe Thygesen watched the scene at a distance. Eriksen, Malte and Sofus engrossed in conversation with a joke or two thrown in here and there. Mother Nenna also looked on, filled with emotion, as her little boy’s biggest wish had come true.
