Coach Henk ten Cate only gave his players one assignment in the friendly against amateur club JOS/Watergraafsmeer: make sure you have fun. Ajax won 5-1 in the match which saw the unofficial debut of three new Ajax players.
Spanish midfielders Roger and Gabri made their first minutes in the Ajax strip. Romanian right back George Ogararu did the same. Together with youngsters Jan Vertonghen, Emmanuel Boakye and Kenneth Vermeer, they attracted the most attention in the lineup of new coach Henk ten Cate.
,,This match is mainly meant to see the young players and the new players at work'', said the coach.
After a tough week of training, Ten Cate was pleased with the way the first friendly match had gone. He also siad to be happy with the entire week. The result did not matter much; at this stage it's all about getting to know each other and having fun. ,,We have trained eight times in the past week, often under tropical circumstances'', said Ten Cate. ,,Then I'm happy when the team gives a good effort in the first match. I also saw nice goals today.''
Nicolae Mitea, starting left winger, was the first to score, after 10 minutes. In the first half, captain Klaas Jan Huntelaar was the only one to do so too.
Rydell Poepon, the youngster came on for Roger at halftime, made it 0-3 after 69 minutes. Then home side JOS scored from a corner. Angelos Charisteas, on for Huntelaar in the second half, scored to make it 1-4 and Mitea put in Ajax's fifth.
Ajax were still without the seven players who were active at the World Cup and also missed newcomers Jaap Stam, Kenneth Perez, Dennis Gentenaar and Michael Krohn-Dehli, as well as Thomas Vermaelen. All still are bothered by minor injuries.
