Ajax 2 coach John van 't Schip was brief in his summation of the semi-final match: 'terrible'. He was right. But Ajax 2 qualified for the final of the national cup for reserve teams, thanks to a goal by junior player Sergio Cameron who came on late in the match.
Ajax 2 seemed to have a collective off-day against FC Utrecht 2. And that happened in a match that was one of the most important ones of the season. The team that wins the Amstel Malt Cup (the cup for second teams), earns a place in the big national cup next season. It is the only prize left for the young squad, that had to rely heavily on youth players to complete the team every week, this season.
Utrecht 2 had the better chances in Amsterdam, and Ajax were fortunate that goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was on great form. the match went into overtime when it was still 0-0 after 90 minutes.
In the twelfth minute of the first half of overtime Sergio Cameron, who had replaced winger Victor Sikora, manage to slide in a cross by Michael Krohn-Dehli. It was the Golden Goal and Ajax 2 were through to the final, despite the poor performance. PSV 2 will be the opponent after they eliminated Feyenoord 2.
