Luis Suarez and Nicolas Lodeiro reached the World Cup quarterfinals with Uruguay on Saturday. Uruguay defeated South Korea 2-1 in their round of sixteen match in Port Elizabeth. Ajax captain Suarez was the star of the match, scoring two goals.
Jumping over the boards, man of the match Suarez celebrated Uruguay’s winning goal ten minutes before the game’s end, getting swept up in both the glorious moment, and stunning goal. Suarez’s beautiful curve shot went via the post into the far corner behind the South Korean keeper. It was the Ajax forward’s third goal during this World Cup, and this win earned Uruguay a spot among the last eight teams for the first time since 1970.
Suarez was the star of the match on this rainy afternoon in Port Elizabeth. He scored first in the eighth minute. With the opposing keeper’s help – he didn’t clear Diego Forlan’s shot properly – Suarez made good on his chance to score, bringing Uruguay to an early 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second half, South Korea tied the match. Chung Yung Lee scored, neutralising Suarez’s early goal.
But Uruguay, with Nicolas Lodeiro in as a substitute during the last fifteen minutes, quickly moved ahead. Once again, it was Ajax’s captain and top scorer who commanded everyone’s attention ten minutes before time. With a beautiful right shot, he scored: 2-1. But South Korea threatened one more time. Dung-Gook Lee’s attempt was almost a goal, but captain Lugano made the save at the goal line.
On Friday evening, Uruguay, with Suarez and Lodeiro, will meet the winner of the Ghana – USA match in the quarterfinals.
