Ajax and AS Roma have finalized the transfer of Maarten Stekelenburg. The keeper’s transition to the Italian club is effective immediately. The keeper had been under contract with Ajax until June 30, 2012.
Stekelenburg was born on September 22 1982 in Haarlem. He made his debut in Amsterdam on August 11, 2002, in the Ajax – PSV (3-1) match. The keeper has played 282 official matches to date with Ajax. With Ajax, Maarten Stekelenburg won the national championship three times (2002,2004,2011), the KNVB Cup three times (2006, 2007, 2010) and the Johan Cruijff Plate four times (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007). His current contract with Ajax ran until June 30, 2012.
Stekelenburg made his debut on the Dutch national team on September 3, 2004, and he has played 40 interlands to date. In 2010, he reached the World Cup finals in South Africa with the Dutch team.
