When Ajax and Groningen face off, it is always spectacular. Just like earlier this season in Amsterdam, Ajax won after a spectaculair match (3-2), this time in Groningen. Leonardo capped off the comeback with a goal in the final minute.
For a long time, a victory was not in the cards for Ajax. Last season the team lost twice in the new Euroborg stadium and in the first half, it looked like FC Groningen would defeat Ajax again. Levchenko scored from a penalty kick, after which Luis Suarez doubled the home side's league in the 40th minute: 2-0.
Ajax had to thank Jaap Stam and John Heitinga for getting the team back on track just on time. The wo defensive-minded players brought Ajax alongside the hosts. Captain Stam did it on a tacticallygood moment: shortly after halftime. Ten minutes before the end, Heitinga struck for the equaliser: 2-2. Between the goals by Stam and Heitinga, the home team left many chances unused to take further distance from the visitors. ,,At 2-1, Groningen had chances to go up 3-1’’, said Ten Cate. ,,And at 2-0 they could have made it 3-0. In the end, we cannot complain. I am very happy with this win.’’
Shortly after Stam made it 2-1, Ten Cate brought on Leonardo to replace Gabri. The Brazilian gave Ajax the deciding edge. In the final minute Kenneth Perez hit the post and 'Leo' was in the right place at the right time to shoot in the winning goal: 2-3.
