On the evening before the UEFA Champions League match against Ajax in Amsterdam, Club Brugge trained in the ArenA. Shortly before, coach Trond Sollied said that he hoped 'Club' would play as well as they can and, of course, that his players win one or three points in the match against Ajax.
The Belgians were a little late arriving at the stadium in Amsterdam. ,,We couldn't find it very well, but tomorrow we'll definitely be on time'', smiled Sollied.
About Ajax the coach said this: ,,In the seventies and nineties Ajax had a great team. At this moment they are not as good as back then, but they are still quite good. Last year we saw that the team grew in the tournament. The match in Milan says enough. AC Milan is the winner of the UEFA Champions League after all. To beat Ajax, we must play well, and we also need a bit of luck. That is the luck that good teams often have. Ajax will need that bit of luck as well.''
The Norwegian coach still doesn't know with which players he can begin the match on Wednesday evening. ,,The training will answer the last questions I still have about the starting line-up. That also includes whether or not David Rozehnal can play. He trains with a mask and if that doesn't bother him, we'll decide on Wednesday morning if he'll play. Because he will have to be convinced that he can give a hundred percent'', Sollied said. Brugge's Czech defender has a broken orbit bone and has to protect his face with a mask to be bale to play against Ajax.
Olivier de Cock is another question mark for Sollied. The defender was only able to train with the group once after an injury. Nastja Ceh, a defender, and Josip Simic, forward, are also doubtful for the match.
Sollied was brief about his team's tactics: ,,I have a simple philosophy. When we have the ball, we have to attack. If not, then we have to defend. In between, you have to find a balance. We cannot let Ajax have the time to play their own game. If we play as a group, we might win a point or three points. Despite the fact that we miss some key players, I still hope that we'll be the best that we can be'', the Norwegian coach announced.
Timmy Simons had joined his coach at the table during the press conference. The Belgian was asked about his impression of Ajax. ,,Ajax are a very good team, they play technically sound football. If they get time to play their game, we will be in trouble. We will have to play grouped, mark closely and break out fast. Our game will have to be top level. Last season Ajax got very far in the Champions League, we can't ignore that. We will have to play better than last season'', said Simons.
The international was of course asked about the three Belgians of Ajax. ,,I respect Wesley Sonck, but I am not afraid of him'', he answered. ,,Last season he did not play against us, because he was suspended twice. That was smart of him'', Simons joked. ,,Amongst ourselves we have teased each other a bit about this match, but we hope that the level of play will be high. And we haven't made any bets'', he revealed.
