Each year, Ajax’s last home game of the season is coloured by rituals. Ajax – NEC, the closing game of 2013-2014, was no exception. Christian Poulsen, after the 2-2 tie, was thus thanked for his contributions to Ajax. Lasse Schöne was selected as Ajax Player of the Year. Davy Klaassen was selected as Talent of the Year.
Both the departing Ajax player (Poulsen will leave the club after this season) and his honoured selection mates were addressed by coach Frank de Boer. The successful trainer didn’t only speak warmly. De Boer handed the Rinus Michel Award for best Ajax Player of the past season to Schöne. The multi-functional Ajax player thanked the official Supporters Association of Ajax for his award. Schöne received the most votes in for the Best Ajax Player of the season award. “This prize is truly well – deserved”, the coach said, addressing Schöne. “You were there at the most important times and scored important goals.”
Klaassen received the Marco van Basten Trophy from his coach. The blond Hilversum native broke through in the 2013-2014 championship year. Klaassen even made the Dutch national team this year. For the technical staff, this was reason enough to elect the young Ajax player as Talent of the Year. “You are an example of how a young player should act”, said De Boer to the glowing Klaassen. “For you as well, the title of Talent of the Year is truly well-deserved. I hope that you’ll stay here for a long time and win many more awards.”
Poulsen was praised for his professionalism, among other things. The Dane received several gifts from the supporters groups. Ajax is sad to see the veteran go, although Poulsen’s decision is treated with the utmost respect. Before taking his lap of honour, the Dane helped hoist the new championship banner into the stadium. Poulsen thus completed his last task in the Amsterdam ArenA.
