Ajax and Ricardo van Rhijn have reached an agreement to extend his contract, which had been effective until June 30, 2012. The new contract runs until June 30, 2015. "It feels good for everyone that it is now official", said Ricardo van Rhijn after signing. " It was clear for me from the beginning: I wanted to stay with Ajax. But because things were so hectic, there were delays in the negociations. Fortunately we found a good moment to sign", says the talented Ajax player, who until now has been making his name as a left back. Dennis Bergkamp was at the signing on behalf of the technical team and was the first to congratulat Van Rijn.
Van Rhijn is now under contract until the middle of 2015. The defender attributes this improved contract partly to his time at Jong Ajax. " I have to thank the Jong Ajax technical staff. I have had ups and downs, but thanks to the staff of de Beloften, I have always come back on top." Ajax supporters have been behind Van Rhijn from the start. " You can feel that many people are happy with you. That is a great feeling."
Frank de Boer is also pleased with his player's development. " Ricardo has developed himself incredibly this season. I know him well from our time together in A1 when I was the coach there. He invests a lot of time in himself. I tell him regularly that he has himself to thank. After practices, he does extra work to keep improving. But he's learning the most by playing in the first team. He's done well and his new contract is a logical consequence to his amazing work."
Van Rhijn was born on June 13 1991 in Leiden. The defender has been has been with Ajax's youth academy since 2002, and made his official debut with the first team during the Noordwijk-Ajax (1-3)cup match on September 21, 2011. He has played a total of sixteen official matches in Ajax's first team.
