On Sunday, the Dutch Reserves team made the semi-finals in the Festival International Espoirs de Toulon. KNVB coach and former Ajax coach Adrie Koster’s youth selection closed the group phase by defeated their counterparts from Turkey.
The Reserves attributed their victory, which earned them the title of group winner, to an early goal by Roland Alberg. He scored in the tenth minute. Earlier on, the Netherlands had lost their match to Japan (3-2), but they opened the pool with a 3-0 win against Egypt. Three Ajax players were in the starting eleven on Koster’s team. Ruben Ligeon, Joël Veltman (photo) and Dico Koppers were all on defense at kick off. Jody Lukoki was a substitute.
The Dutch team’s upcoming opponent will not be known until next Monday. The Dutch team’s semi-final game is scheduled for Wednesday. The friendly interlands that Koster’s team are playing are intended to give international exposure and experience to Dutch talents, who can already often be seen playing in the Eredivisie. Thanks to this international experience, talented young players can potentially be streamed through to Jong Oranje.
