The third edition of the AEGON Future Cup was officially opened on Friday. During a special opening ceremony at de Toekomst, each participating team’s captain hoisted the team’s own flag at the entrance. The next three days are all about the international youth B-junior tournament. In addition to host Ajax, Ajax Cape Town, Besiktas, Manchester United, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern München and Desportivo Brasil are participating.
An impressive parade of football players took place at Schiphol on Friday afternoon. Between 11:50a.m. and 3:20p.m., six of the eight teams participating in the AEGON Future Cup landed in the Netherlands. Desportivo Brasil was the first to arrive around noon, and FC Barcelona was the last to arrive towards mid-afternoon. Host Ajax and Ajax Cape Town, who have been here for almost two weeks, complete the field of participants. The area at Schiphol where Joris Linssen from the television show Hello Goodbye normally surprises people was taken over this afternoon by Ajax TV. The participants’ arrival was filmed by Ajax’s official club channel.
At exactly 8.30p.m., each team’s captain hoisted their team’s flag at the entrance of de Toekomst. Half an hour earlier, they all posed together for a photo in the Amsterdam ArenA. After a closing speech from academy technical manager Wim Jonk, the first evening was complete for the B-juniors from Europe, South Africa and Brazil. The teams all retired early to their hotel so that they could be in top form for kick off on Saturday. The opening match between Ajax B1 and Besiktas U-17 begins at 11:30a.m.
