Ajax left Eindhoven with bad memories of the match against PSV. Although the team from Amsterdam had not won in Eindhoven for a decade, Ajax hoped to continue the good form the team had shown against Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Tuesday. But the hope proved idle. Bogdan Lobont will try to forget the traditional, as the goalkeeper made a mistake that led to PSV's first goal and in the second half he suffererd a knee injury and had to come off. The 2-0 was a fair result and Ajax went to fifth place in the league table.
Not only Lobont had to be taken off. Mauro Rosales, playing on the left wing - and that was the only difference with Tuesday's line-up - did not make it to the end either. He was repleced by Mitea in the second half. Koeman did not have to make a choice for first goalkeeper, because Maarten Stekelenburg was bothered by a knee injury too much.
The task for Ajax was far from easy. A defeat against PSV would mean a ten-point difference in the league table. Early in the match Ajax lost the ball too often and PSV were in control. But slowly Ajax got better grip on the match and forced PSV back. Through mainly Hatem Trabelsi Ajax created a number of good offences.
But it was the home team who took the lead, five minutes before halftime. A shot by Young-Pyo Lee went by Lobont in the near corner: 1-0. Wesley Sneijder: ,,We played well against Maccabi on Tuesday and we wanted to continue that way. Just when we wanted to push through, we allowed that goal. It was a very unlucky moment.''
Defensively Ajax were again not on their best form. Quickly in the second half, Trabelsi and Johnny Heitinga could not get the ball from Farfan, who gave it to Lee. He found a wide-open John de Jong who scored easily: 2-0.
The match had been decided. But matter got worse for Ajax when Lobont landed wrongly when catching the ball and twisted his knee. He had to come off and Hans Vonk made his debut for Ajax 1. The South-African goalkeeper was faultless in the remainder of the match.
When also Rosales, not fully recoverd from an injury, was replaced by Mitea, Ajax tried to force a goal. Stanley Aborah came on for Anthony Obodai and Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sonck played closer together up front. One time, when Van der Vaart hit the post, Ajax broke through the solid PSV defence, but the home team kept a clean slate again, their streak beginning on 22 August.
,,It was not a great match'', said Ronald Koeman. ,,There was not much action before both goals. The 1-0 came at a bad moment and after the 2-0 PSV played out the match cleverly.''
