Arsenal fans have voted Dennis Bergkamp's classic strike at Newcastle as the Club's best goal of the decade. Bergkamp received 34 per cent of the votes on Arsenal.com.
,,It is one of the best goals I have made for Arsenal”, says Bergkamp from his holiday address. ,,My best goal was the third one against Leicester, long ago. I made my best goal ever when I played with our national team on the World Championships in 1998 against Argentina. That goal was almost the same as the one against Leicester.”
The current trainer of Ajax youth team D2 tells about his goal against Newcastle: ,,In Newcastle I decided on the very last moment that I had to do it like that. It was the only way. When the ball went to one side and I went to the other, I had to use some power to push the defender away. And I needed a bit luck as well. The ones against Leicester and Argentina needed more technical skills and a lot of exercise. That’s why I like those goals, I could show my talents in there.”
Bergkamp: ,,I didn’t realise that it was something special. For me and my teammates it was so important to win in Newcastle that we were just very happy that we scored the 0-1. We were fighting to win the league. Afterwards I got a lot of questions which were all the same. Did I mean it that way? I was surprised and it made me curious as well. So two days later I watched the goal myself. From that moment I understood what they meant. But yes, this is how I wanted to play the ball to become in a good position to score.”
,,People in the Netherlands also asked me whether I could remember Robin's goal against Charlton. What I remember from that goal was the line of the ball. It was extremely hard and straight forward. But at the very end it had a dip. It was a brilliant strike."
,,Yes it makes me proud that the fans chose my goal. I don't play football for 3,5 years. Arsenal made a lot of goals in the decade. And I remember that tere were several very nice ones. Which isn't a surprise with players like Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Cesc fabregas and Robin. That's what makes it even more special for me."
