Ajax had an off-day against Real Murcia. Two weeks before the start of the Dutch league, Marco van Basten's team lost by 2-1 in a friendly in Spain. ,,We were really bad today”, the coach said.
Real Murcia celebrated its 100th anniversary with a match against Ajax. For the team from Amsterdam, it turned out to be a disappointing evening; not only because of the result but also because of the way Ajax played. ,,I am sure no one left the pitch with a good feeling. Everyone was below standard”, Van Basten said.
Ajax began with Klaas Jan Huntelaar as striker, flanked by Miralem Sulejmani and Luis Suarez, and Dario Cvitanich behind him. A formidable attack on paper, but not very dangerous against Murcia.
After a rather dull first half, Ranko Despotovic gave the home side the lead in the 52nd minute. Suarez brought Ajax level with a free kick that bounced off a Murcia player, but Dialiba decided the match five minutes before the end: 2-1.
