Thanks to the outstanding David Neres, Ajax has posted an easy win against Fortuna Sittard. With two goals scored by the Brazilian and two more by Dusan Tadic, the afternoon ended in a one-sided 4-0 win.
Prior to the game’s start, there was a lot to experience in the stadium, and the club served some nice appetizers. Half an hour before kick-off, announcer Rob van Rossum introduced the players as heroes: “Ladies and gentleman. Here is the selection which gave a world-class performance last Tuesday. Give them a big round of applause”, he shouted thirty minutes before the start of the game in a still-empty Johan Cruijff ArenA.
Shortly after that, Sinclair de Falco from the Ajax U11 secured his record and Lasse Schöne received a beautiful work of art in recognition of his record.
But at 16:45, it was time for the main event: Ajax – Fortuna Sittard. Without Schöne, with Kasper Dolberg. The fans held on, because if the team could dispose of Madrid, certainly the same would be possible against the recently promoted Fortuna.
The Limburg team had no chance against Ajax. In the 4th minute, the score was opened. Tadic received the ball at his feet after Michael Pinto’s play-back header, and took a hard shot: 1-0. It was his 17th Eredivisie goal of the season, a personal record for the Serb, who is in outstanding form.
Ajax had Fortuna by the throat and the green and yellow clad team only came out of their own half when the keeper sent the ball forward, past everyone. This resulted in a noteworthy moment for Onana, who was almost beaten by Tagliafico. Prior to that, both Tadic and Neres had come close to scoring the 2-0 goal.
It took until the 28th minute for the 2-0 goal to be scored. Hakim Ziyech made a pass from the left, Dolberg let the ball go, Neres was faster than Pinto and scored Ajax’s second goal. More opportunities came against a mediocre Fortuna, but Ajax didn’t build on its lead any more in the first half.
Schöne for De Jong
At the start of the second half, Schöne took over from Frenkie de Jong at midfield. When Ajax took a free kick in the 48th minute in the same spot as where the Dane had scored the 1-4 goal in Bernabéu on Tuesday, the crowd watched attentively. This time, the keepr didn’t falter and Koselev ticked the ball away from the crossbar.
Visitors’ attacking intentions ineffective
Ajax shifted into lower gear after 60 minutes. Fortuna was thus able to come out of its shell somewhat, which led to its first attempt to score. A few more tries would come in the rest of the game for coach René Eijer’s team, but it was Ajax, via Neres and Tadic, who were able to score, 4-0.
Ajax will play in the Johan Cruijff ArenA in three days, when the game against PEC Zwolle, postponed due to the international schedule, will take place.
