Day 2 of the Ajax Indonesia Tour 2014 started in the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium with a clinic for kids. Most of the Ajax players didn’t seem to be bothered by jetlag and helped enthusiastically during the football exercises.
Christian Poulsen was clear when he announced his departure: coaching is one of the options he’s thinking of. Whether or not it actually happens is yet unknown of course, but the Dane seemed perfectly at ease working with kids in Jakarta. He gave high fives, taught his team the art of keeping the ball in the air with headers and also expected his team to perform well. “Ten push-ups for the losing team”, he laughed.
Fun and relaxed: that was the atmosphere at the Gelora Bung Karno, the stadium where Ajax will play its first match of the Ajax Indonesia Tour on Sunday. The players sang the Ajax club song, were divided into groups and got to work with the kids: in this case, the children of the organizers and prize winners. It was a cheerful event under the hot Indonesian sun. At the sidelines, all of the parents watched their children enjoy this experience. Edwin van der Sar – immensely popular in Indonesia – watched on with satisfaction. “It’s a nice day, thanks to the help of local coaches who can translate everything for the kids.”
Frank de Boer remained the coach that he is for his team. The head coach walked from group to group and gave instructions where needed. But naturally, he also took the time to pose for pictures with the children and their parents. All of the participants received a championship poster with the text ‘Kami Adalah Ajax’: We are Ajax. And that was Saturday morning in Jakarta: everyone, young and old, Indonesian and Dutch, player and spectator, felt like they belonged to Ajax.
