Ajax ended the regular season with a 5-1 win against Heracles Almelo. But despite the five Ajax goals, the was little reason for celebation, as PSV captured the national title. Ajax now have to get ready for the playoffs.
During the first half the mood was optimistic in the ArenA. Ajax took a big lead through Luis Suarez, Kenneth Perez and Klaas Jan Huntelaar, and at Vitesse - PSV it was still 0-0. One goal by Vitesse and Ajax would take the virtual lead in the league. But early into the second half, the mood changed in the stadium. Word came that PSV had scored. The crowd went quiet and the Ajax players slowed down. Heracles scored and everyone knew te title was out of reach. ,,The players heard that PSV had scored in Arnhem”, Adrie Koster said. ,,Then we lost our spirit a bit. But in the end, we scored twice more.”
A 5-1 victory, nice goals but no title and no celebration. ,That's why we're not really happy today”, Koster said. ,,Now we have to focus on the playoffs to qualify for a place in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League.”
Ajax face sc Heerenveen, the number 5 in the league.
With the way they played in the past weeks, Ajax can look ahead with confidence to the clash with Heerenveen. After the short dip after the news of PSV's goal, Kenneth Perez and John Heitinga widened the gap with Heracles to 5-1.
Heitinga's goal was a nice one and was especially cheered by the Ajax supporters. The send-off he received after the match was also special and touching. But because PSV won the championship, Heitinga is not yet finished with his club.
