Yannis Anastasiou, Ajax's new striker, was presented to the media on Wednesday. In the presence of managing director Arie van Eijden, technical director Louis van Gaal and head coach Ronald Koeman, the Greek forward signed a contract for one and a half season with the club from Amsterdam.
Van Gaal and Koeman explained the circumstances of the flash transfer of the striker from Roda JC to Ajax. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wesley Sonck and Rafael van der Vaart all injured, Ajax had a void at the forward position.
,,Anastasiou adds quality on a position where we have many problems at the moment. And what if al, strikers are healthy again? We'll cross that bridge when we get to it'', said Koeman. ,,Yannis has scoring ability and experience, and that is also very important with a young group like ours.''
Anastasiou joined Ajax just in tiem to be able to play against PSV on Sunday. How is his scoring record against the team from Eindhoven? ,,I have scored twice against them in each of the last two seasons'', said the forward.
Louis van Gaal went to see Anastasiou in his last match for Roda JC, before Ajax decided to go ahead with the transfer. ,,This was not the most normal transfer. That has nothing to do with Yannis, but with the procedure. Exceptional circumstances have contributed to the way it went.''
,,Ryan Babel did a good job in the last match. But he has just turned seventeen. We have to beware that young players are not overburdened. We have to give Babel some time and we expect that he can replace Yannis in a year and a half.''
,,I have a feeling that Anastasiou will be able to adapt to playing at Ajax'', said Van Gaal. ,,And I also have a feeling that he'll score against PSV. And my predictions often come true.''
