Mixed emotions for Gentenaar

Ajax finished the football year 2006 with a draw at NEC (2-2). For goalkeeper Dennis Gentenaar it was an afternoon full of mixed feelings. In his birthplace against his former club he saw his current team lose two points.

The NEC fans had made an enormous banner with their former goalkeeper on it. It was a show of gratitude for Gentenaar, who played ten seasons for the club from Nijmegen. ,,Such a reception is great for a sportsman. I did not expect this and I got goosebumps when I saw it. Incredible that people do such a thing for me’’, said Gentenaar. ,,It was special that I got to play in the first place, and playing against your former club is even more special.’’

The match with NEC came to life after an hour. Kenneth Perez, who returned from a five-game suspension, fired in the first goal (0-1). Romano Denneboom and Peter Wisgerhof then gave the home side the lead by scoring a goal each within a space of two minutes. Ajax were shaken up, but scored the deserved equaliser through a good header by Gabri from a cross by sub Tom de Mul. Ajax then tried for the winnig goal, but a week after the loss at Vitesse the side again lost valuable points.

Naturlly, the fact that his team did not manage a win in Nijmegen gave Gentenaar a feeling of disappointment. ,,We lost two points today. We could have won, but it did not happen. That's a shame.’’
