Ajax’ first team practiced in all openness in front of the fans on Thursday morning. Normally this would take place on a Tuesday, but manager Frank de Boer had moved the public practice to Thursday due to many players having some time off. The supporters, who turned up in their dozens as usual, watched Eyong Enoh and Derk Boerrigter practice with the group. Under 19s’ Fabian Sporkslede and Mitchell Dijks joined in as well.
There are certain great benchmarks on the long road to the top for an up and coming professional football player. Just as signing the first contract and debuting on the first team are the most important milestones. But debuting at practice with Ajax’ first team can also be loudly applauded, as Mitchell Dijks demonstrated on Wednesday afternoon. On his twitter account he posted 'Mitchell Dijks finally joins Ajax’ first. Dream comes true!' The fact that it was a public training was an added bonus. In January of this year Dijks renewed his contract until June 2015. Now, two months later, he joined Ajax’ first team on the pitch for the first time.
Dijks, who prepared for the second half of the season with the Ajax Reserves, found himself surrounded by all the first team players, focussing on the home match against RKC Waalwijk next Sunday. Eyong Enoh and Derk Boerrigter joined the group in practice, although Boerrigter did leave the pitch a little ahead of his fellow players. Even before that though, the players who played on the Ajax Reserves on Tuesday evening had been allowed to leave. After 45 minutes Ismaïl Aissati, Thulani Serero, Mats Rits, Daley Blind and Ricardo van Rhijn walked off. That’s when the three seven-a-sides became one eight-a-side. Fabian Sporkslede also took part and stood his ground.
Lorenzo Ebecilio was explicitly in search of scoring with a lob like Messi did in FC Barcelona’s Champions League match last Wednesday evening. The Ajax player, who scored three times in one match half last Sunday, just as Messi did against Leverkussen on Wednesday, almost succeeded. But he had to acknowledge that the top goal of the morning was scored by Dmitry Bulykin. He kicked diagonally into the top left corner, from the right. RKC goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet should heed the Russians warning. You can see for yourself on Sunday.
