Ajax had a difficult afternoon against amateur side DVS ´33 in the last match of the training camp in De Lutte. Ajax won with 'only' 6-0. Not because the opposition was greater than in the previous matches, although the home side played fairly well, but because Ajax were tired and the weather was very hot. It was the first match in an Ajax shirt for new defender Julien Escudé. The Frenchman played one half.
Coach Ronald Koeman knew why his team could not get a win with double figures. ,,The guys are tired. They have trained very hard the past week. And the heat was also a factor today.'' Koeman was satisfied with Escudé's play. ,,He is a good header of the ball, especially defensively. He's still getting used to everything, but we are very happy that he is here'', Koeman said.
Ajax started carefully and waited until the 13th minute to open the score through a goal by new striker Wesley Sonck. The Belgian then gave two assists to allow Wamberto and Nourdin Boukhari to extend Ajax's lead at halftime to 3-0. Ajax should have added at least one more goal, but Rafael van der Vaart saw a penalty stopped.
In the second half Ajax scored two quick goals through Jari Litmanen and Wamberto. Another double-digit victory suddenly seemed possible again, but the fatigue and heat proved too much.
Another reason for Ajax's lapse was Litmanen's exit with a knee injury. The new team captain had to be replaced by Boukhari, who had been substituted at halftime, in the 66th minute. Litmanen is still very important to Ajax, as his vision and passing bring speed into the team's offence.
Ajax had a few more chances to score, but only Wesley Sneijder, with a beautiful strike from distance, managed to put one in and made it 6-0 to Ajax.
Ajax have Sunday off, training on Monday and Tuesday the team go to England for the first test matches against professional teams. Nottingham Forest and Derby County will provide the opposition.
