Koster is the first member of the Ajax women’s team. Daphne Koster will leave Telstar to play for Ajax in the upcoming season. The Dutch team’s captain will play with the Amsterdam club in the BeNe-League. “My childhood dream is coming true”, said the 31 year old player happily.
When she was six years old, Koster played for SVA in Assendelft and worshipped football. “My room became more and more red and white”, remembers the international. “I had everything of Ajax’s, from training suits to my bedspread. I had posters of Dennis Bergkamp and Edgar Davids hanging, but when it became clear that it wouldn’t be possible for girls to play at Ajax, it all became less. I was very disappointed, because boys from my class were able to go to Ajax for an internship, or to AZ. But it wasn’t in the cards for me.”
Koster made the Dutch national team and has since played 119 interlands. She’s currently recovering from an injury, but is hopeful that she’ll be able to play in the EC qualifying match against England on June 17. When it was announced last week that Ajax was going to start participating in women’s football, Koster’s earlier dream was revived. “It was clear for me right away that if the opportunity came up, that I would play for my club.”
And it did. Koster, who has also played for the American Sky Blue FC and AZ, was approached and she informed her current club Telstar that she was leaving for Amsterdam. “They’re disappointed that I’m leaving, but they respect my choice. I’m pleased to join a professional organization like Ajax and look forward to contributing to the club.”
