Ajax and Joël Veltman have reached an agreement to extend his contract, which was effective until June 30, 2013. The new, improved contract is effective as of July 1, 2012, until June 30, 2015.
“It’s nice to start the summer holidays with a new contract”, said Veltman after signing. “I had a bad knee injury. It’s hard to come back, but it’s great that it happened so fast. I had set my sights on next year, but I was back by December, and I was even part of the first team’s selection twice.” Veltman is a right footed defender who wants to develop even more at the back. “I’m a pure defender, keeping balls away and sending them out. You need pure defenders in football.”
Veltman will join the first team at the beginning of next season. “I’m starting with the A selection. I need to show them what I can do; that will determine whether I stay with the first team, or join Jong Ajax.”
Technical manager Wim Jonk is pleased with Veltman’s extension. “He’s a guy who plays with a lot of passion, the kind of player who’s always there. He’s developed well and he’s being rewarded by joining the first team. Joël has a great future ahead.”
Veltman was born on January 15 1992 in Velsen. The right footed defender has been playing in Ajax’s youth academy since the 2001-2002 season and is currently playing on the reserves team
