Jelle van Damme started as an apprentice at Ajax and subsequently earned a contract. In his first year in Amsterdam he saw action in both the Dutch league and the Champions League. A toe injury was the only blemish on the year.
Where do you celebrate Christmas and/or New Year’s Eve?
,,In Belgium, with my family; my parents, brother and sister. I am not going away during the winter break. It’s not worth it for those two weeks. But that time is enough to put everything aside for a while, without it being at the expense of your conditioning. I love good food. But I guess all Belgians do that.’’
What was the most important in 2002?
,,I got a contract with Ajax and I have already played in the Champions League. I am also moving to Amstelveen, I like that.’’
Expectations for 2003?
,,I hope that I can continue playing the way I have done in the first half of the season. At least, before I got that stupid toe injury playing for Belgium. That has kept me out for longer than I expected. If I had not been injured, I might have played two more Champions League matches. After the winter break I expect John O’Brien back in the group and he’ll give my competition. Privately I hope everything keeps going the way it has. I have a house now…’’
With whom would you like to drink champagne?
,,With a Belgian girl, Caroline. We have known each other a bit better since a few days.’’
