Ajax play PSV in Amsterdam on Sunday. The match will probably decide which team will enter the winter break as the leader in the league table. Ajax, undefeated so far, are currently in first place, followed by PSV with one point less.
Judging by goals scored against them, PSV have the best defence in the league, allowing only eight goals in fifteen matches. PSV also have the country’s top scorer in their ranks. In those fifteen matches Mateja Kezman has scored seventeen times. The team from Eindhoven so far has only lost once. Feyenoord beat PSV 2-1 in Eindhoven.
The main goal for Ajax this season is winning the league title. Only then the team qualifies directly for the Champions League. Ajax have never defeated PSV in a league match in the Arena. However, in the last two official matches Ajax were victorious. In last season’s cup semi-final Ajax won 3-0 and that meant the squad’s first victory against PSV in the Arena. ,,We finally dealt with our PSV-syndrome’’, Ajax’s coach Ronald Koeman said in an earlier interview with Ajax.nl. In August, Ajax won again, 3-1 this time in the match for the Johan Cruijff Shield, the Dutch Super Cup.
If Ajax win, the difference between the two clubs will be four points. It could give Ajax a much needed cushion, when the league resumes after the winter break and Ajax have to play in three competitions (league, cup and Champions League) simultaneously. Ajax close the first half of the season with an away match against Excelsior, while PSV finish the first half at home against Vitesse. If Ajax defeat PSV, they will go into the winter break as the ‘autumn champions’, regardless of the result of the last match.
