The Upside Down Foundation and the MF Foundation organized a football tournament especially for kids and young adults with Down’s Syndrome on Wednesday at de Toekomst. Ajax had made de Toekomst available for this nice family day.
With ‘geef Down de Toekomst’ (‘Give Down the future’), Upside Down is not only referring to Ajax’s sports complex, but to a positive image that is fundamental to the acceptance in integration into society for people with Down’s Syndrome. Now, and in the future. The goal for this day was to provide the foundation with a donation with which additional attention could be brought to kids with Down’s Syndrome.
Ajax is happy to participate in this special day at de Toekomst. “We got a warm feeling as soon as we heard about this project”, says Ineke Gielen, an employee with the Ajax Foundation. “On behalf of Ajax, the fields and clubhouse were made available. We’re very happy to be part of a day like this. This is what we, Ajax and the Ajax Foundation, stand for. This project warms our heart.”
This unique football tournament was held with seventy kids, in a maximum of eleven teams. Each team was joined by a Dutch celebrity. Humberto Tan kicked off the tournament. A few celebrities to participate on Wednesday afternoon were Sita, Hans van Breukelen, Sebastiaan Labrie, Richard Witschge and Berget Lewis.
There was also lots to do at de Toekomst for the kids who didn’t wish to take part in the tournament. From jumbo cushions to jump on to fun games (speed tests, obstacle course, shooting into the goal), the kids had a great time with their brothers or sisters.
At the end of the football tournament, each child received a certificate, an Ajax goody bag and a ball from the All-In Group (the afternoon’s head sponsor), and of course the winning team received a trophy. There was a buffet at the end for everyone. The cozy day was ended by wonderful performances by Sita, Berget Lewis, Mark Haayema and Voluit during the meal.
