The Ajax selection returned to Amsterdam directly after winning their Europa League match against Legia Warsaw on Thursday night. A practice was scheduled for Friday afternoon. The day after the win in Poland, the focus had already shifted to PSV-Ajax.
The training took place in the Amsterdam ArenA. The players started with a warm up and after that, there was a round of keep-away. Coach Frank de Boer participated in the position play as well. After the squad players from the Legia duel had retreated to the catacombs, the substitute players remained.
Right after the training, De Boer and Nick Viergever held a press conference. In addition to discussing Ajax’s upcoming Europa League opponent, the press conference was about Sunday’s match against PSV. “Obviously, we’re hoping for a good result against PSV on Sunday”, said Viergever. “The gap with PSV is fourteen points. We’re focusing on second place, which would give us the right to take part in the Champions League qualifying rounds. That’s important for Ajax. And who knows what can happen if we book a good result against PSV.”
De Boer knows PSV’s strengths. The Eindhoven team is very dangerous in the counter. PSV showcased those skills earlier this season successfully against Ajax in the ArenA. The Ajax coach knows what his team needs to do against PSV. “There are guys that you need to keep an eye on in the counter. We’ll need to play compactly. Also, we’ll need to keep it together on defense.”
The group of players who travelled to Warsaw has remained fit. Only Davy Klaassen had some trouble with an old injury during the match. “The field didn’t help, the pollen from the grass was flying everywhere”, said De Boer, who had seen it and heard it from his players. “Davy had trouble with his injury because the field was so hard to play on. But there is a big chance that he’ll play on Sunday against PSV.”
