Rafael van der vaart scored his first goal for Holland in the qualifier for Euro 2004 against Austria on Saturday. Holland won 3-1 in Rotterdam. The other Ajax players who played with their national teams, had a successful weekend.
Van der Vaart played up front with Patrick Kluivert against Austria and it proved a good combination. In the 30th minute Kluivert headed the ball to the Ajax player, who freed himself and struck hard in the upper corner behind goalkeeper Thomas Mandl.
Austria levelled through Pogatetz in the 34th minute, but second-half goals by Kluivert and Philip Cocu made sure Holland are still in the race for the top spot in their group.
Holland's rivals for that spot, the Czech Republic, escaped in Belarus. After trailing 1-0, the team won with 3-1. Zdenek Grygera played the entire match as the right back, Tomás Galásek was kept out with a thigh injury.
Although Zlatan Ibrahimovic was doubtful for the qualifying match Sweden - San Marino due to a groin injury, the striker played anyway and scored twice in the ninety minutes he was on the pitch. Sweden won 4-0.
Romania defeated Luxembourg 4-0 on Saturday. Ajax's goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont played the entire match. Nicolae Mitea did not receive playing time and Cristian Chivu only played the first half.
Finland, with Petri Pasanen as a central defender, won in Azerbaijan with 1-2.
