The club's top goalscorer and the player who made his debut were in the spotlights after FC Twente - Ajax. Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Gregory van der Wiel both looked back happily on the 4-1 win at FC Twente.
Both Ajax players told a happy tale to the numerous members of the media. The four Ajax goals were discussed again and again. The goal by Twente's Blaise N’Kufo was nothing more than an accident.
Gregory van der Wiel, 19 years old and normally playing for Young Ajax, was the focal point of the attention of the journalists. The defender played a very solid ninety minutes in Enschede.
,,It was a fantastic debut’’, Van der Wiel said proudly. ,,It was a great atmosphere. A debut does not get much better when you defeat the number three. Who wins, always feels good.’’
The defender heard on the morning of the match that he would start against FC Twente. In the absence of Jaap Stam, Van der Wiel played as one of the cenral defenders. After only a few minutes he announced his presence with a strike from distance. The ball went just high of the goal of former Ajax player Sander Boschker. ,,There was no time to think, I just shot it.’’ Was the teenager nervous about his debut? Van der Wiel: ,,You try to play the way you always do. I was mainly happy when I heard I would start. You have to concentrate and do your own thing. Shortly after kickoff all tensions disapeared.’’
After the early 1-0 by N’Kufo, Klaas Jan Huntelaar signed for the equaliser. Huntelaar added two more goals to his total after that. The striker took Wesley Sneijder's place as the club's top goalscorer. Huntelaar now is on 15 goals, Sneijder remains on 13 for now. ,,My third goal was the best’’, said Huntelaar looking back. ,,The cross by Urby (Emanuelson, ed.) was a good one and the ball was on the right spot straight away. And the finish was not bad either. But today it was mainly about how well we played as a team. If we defeat PSV next week, we're back in the race.’’
On the afternoon on which PSV dropped two points against Excelsior (0-0) Ryan Babel also scored in the Arke Stadium. The forward capped off some great individual moves with a fine goal. AZ and Feyenoord also played 0-0, making Ajax the winners of the weekend.
Coach Henk ten Cate praised his first-time player after the fine performance by his team. ,,Van der Wiel made an impressive debut. After all, this was a match with a lot at stake. Gregory played his role well. Ajax have achieved a good victory today.’’
