Ajax and Anwar El Ghazi have reached an agreement for the extension of his contract, which had been effective until June 30, 2016. The new, improved contract will be retroactively effective per October 1, 2014, and is valid until June 30, 2019.
El Ghazi was born on May 3, 1995, in Barendrecht. He made his debut in the first team on August 3, 2014, in the PEC Zwolle – Ajax (1-0) match for the Johan Cruijff Shield. Up until now, he’s played in nineteen official matches in Ajax’s first team, scoring six points. “There’s no happier person here right now”, says El Ghazi. “I certainly didn’t need long to think this over. I am enjoying my time at Ajax very much, the club has faith in me and the crowds are fantastic.”
Recently, players such as Davy Klaassen, Ricardo van Rhijn, Joël Veltman and Jasper Cillessen have also renewed their contracts at Ajax. El Ghazi: “It’s important to keep this core together and grow as one team. We all want to stay together and achieve from there.”
El Ghazi has been suffering from a groin injury lately, meaning he missed last Sunday’s match in The Hague. This muscle injury will keep him sidelined for the upcoming match against Willem II as well. Leading up to the match that will follow that one, on Wednesday December 10 against Apoel FC, his ability to play will be evaluated on a daily basis. At this moment, it’s doubtful whether he’ll be fit enough to play in this latest duel in the pool phase of the UEFA Champions League.
