Dominant Ajax reaches UEFA Champions League after scoreless tie!

Ajax is back in the UEFA Champions League.  A dominant Ajax didn’t give Dynamo Kiev any chance to breathe in this away game.  The Amsterdam team will go through to the tournament thanks to a 3-1 home win, and this scoreless tie in the Ukraine.

Ajax kicked off against Dynamo Kiev with 3 changes. Max Wöber replaced the suspended Nico Tagliafico at left back.  Noussair Mazraoui and Lasse Schöne returned to the squad – they had received a free night against FC Emmen.  Carel Eiting and Rasmus Kristensen were on the bench, just like in the home game against Dynamo Kiev.

The match was five minutes old when the home team posed its first danger.  Benjamin Verbic was able to extend a curving pass, and Andre Onana made the save.  With a feline reflex, the goalie was able to convert the shot into a corner.

To the spot
When Ajax had come out from the pressure from Dynamo Kiev after 10 minutes of play, the Amsterdam team was able to head for the opponent’s goal.  During a corner in the 14th minute, captain Matthijs de LLigt was held by Kedziora.  Referee Skomina didn’t hesitate and pointed to the spot: penalty.

Dusan Tadic took his place confidently behind the ball.  His penalty kick landed hard on the inside of the post.  But the Serbian international was unable to convert the rebound into a goal.

Opportunities Tadic, Huntelaar, Van de Beek and Ziyech
After half an hour, Ajax took charge more and more.  This led to successive opportunities for Tadic, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Donny van de Beek and Hakim Ziyech.  But Erik ten Hag’s team did not create any big opportunities.

This changed just before halftime.  Van de Beek had freed himself up nicely behind Dynamo Kiev’s defense, and had a clean pass up his sleeve for Huntelaar.  The experienced striker took possession of the ball, but keeper Denys Boyko stormed up towards him rapidly.  Due to good goalkeeping, Huntelaar was unable to send the ball against the ropes, and both teams ended the first half without scoring.

Opportunities to burn, but no goals
Ajax appeared in the second half unchanged, and continued to create opportunities.  In the 52nd minute, Mazraoui tested keeper Boyka.  His header on a pass from Tadic wasn’t aimed into the corner properly.  A few minutes later, Ajax came close once again.  A free kick by Ziyech bounced off the crossbar.  For the 4th time in 2 games, the post stood between the Amsterdam team and a goal.

Good enough

Ziyech, floating between right flank and the field’s axe, continued to create spaces up front.  Via Ziyech and Huntelaar, Ajax came close to scoring several times, but never managed.

Thanks to the 3-1 win at home, this scoreless tie in Kiev was good enough to stay alive after the playoffs.  The draw takes place on Thursday, and Ajax will find out who its next 3 opponents will be.
